SLM: School Library Management

This project started in year 2023 in Dunkirk's Jean Bart high school (France). School books there are managed by a non-profit association, the "school's cooperative", animated by volunteers. About 1500 students enjoy loans of books managed by this association; all of those "clients" come during less than a week, to fetch their books when the school year begins, and come again at the end of the year to give back the books they hired.

To name the SLM project, one can say "Salaam" (سَّلَام), "Shalom" (שָׁלוֹם), which can be translated genuinely as "salute", but can also mean "peace".

Short history

SLM was inspired by GemaSCO , the management software for school books developped by the organization OpenAcademie , distributed under the free/libre license EUPL .

In year 2023, GemaSCO was used in more than 300 schools, and is enjoied by more than one hundred of thousands students, and helps to manage about one million school books.

SLM is usng the Python library named Django, which allows one to define data models based on the same structures of tables which GemaSCO uses.

SLM is a web application, which is targetted to use few server power, and works natively with multiple clients for transaction. The database is made of a single file managed by SQLite3.
